Candy
Silkscreen monotypes, paper & ceramics
2016

Silkscreen printing is a fine art, but more essentially, it is a skilled craft. This craft entails mastering multiple variables in a single act. Candy is a series of screen-printed works that challenge these variables to produce evocative imagery in an unconventional style, creating attractive color fields rather than isolated layers of color. By releasing control of composition to the natural tendency of the medium, the opportunity to print becomes ephemeral. Only a singular successful work can be produced before the color grows ambiguous and renders the process obsolete. Relying on this tedious and monotonous process requires discipline and vision, as the production of these works is not immediately fruitful. This studio practice of production illuminates the integrity of the work’s materiality through the application and latency within these processes. The printmaking and ceramic works both rely on the medium’s systematic procedure to evolve, not on the artists' mediums. Although the approach to developing these works is concentrated on a conceptual foundation, these works are a product that captures the beautiful aesthetic of chance, serendipity, and intuitive nature.
